THE "GAME CHANGER" IN THE WORLD OF OFF-ROAD TIRES
I receive almost daily messages on instagram, tik tok (yes, I had to give in..) and facebook about these tires that, especially in Italy, enjoy an “aura of mystery” given their little or no current presence on the Italian market. Living in Spain and being Motoz present in the area for a few years, here I am to be your Caronte in this journey to discover a company dedicated to the off-road world where quality, performance and durability are the keys to its growing success.
First of all: what are they called? “Motoz”, “Moto zeta”, “Moto zee”… The word is a fusion of “moto” with “oz”, where “oz” is the Australian contracted nickname used by Australians, very used to abbreviate words. In fact, Australia becomes “aussie”, which when pronounced sounds “oz-ee” and then contracts “oz”. So,‘MotOZ’!
Motoz is, of course, an Australian company that has been in business for over twenty years and calls itself the “craft beer” of tires: created by enthusiasts and aimed at users who appreciate the uniqueness and high quality of the products. Designers and testers are the same people, united by a strong passion for off-road and who some time ago, frustrated by the poor performance and durability of the products on the market, decided to venture into the creation of a specific product that could become a market leader and carve a niche for itself among the ‘majors’ in the sector. And here we are today, with a mature company that is taking the tire world by storm: there are currently 12 models in the catalog, plus dedicated inner tubes and mousses, with 100% natural, mixed and synthetic/hybrid rubber compounds.
Research, development and testing are carried out in Australia, while production takes place in Thailand, known as the world’s tire center, in a private company that has been manufacturing tires for 40 years and from which Motoz is the only off-road tire produced. Motoz also owns the necessary templates and tools for production according to your strict parameters and exactly as required, as well as licenses, intellectual property and international trademarks. This has earned it the valuable certification ISO9001:2008 y BVQI for each of its products, as well as the approval of TUV.
The 3 families of Motoz tires
The tires produced by Motoz are mainly distinguished and grouped into 3 categories according to the type of use: Traction, Hybrid and Terrapactor. In addition, depending on the type of terrain, the models are labeled as follows:
H/T -> Hard ground. Gravel tracks, firebreaks, stone trials, compact desert areas, sand and extreme situations. Long-lasting.
I/T -> Intermediate terrain (mixed terrain). A mixture of all soil types. Average duration.
S/T -> Soft ground. Forest and undergrowth, loose soil, mud. High traction, shorter service life.
Let’s take a closer look at the models.
Tractionator
This is the most widely used and best known category in the dual sport / adventure / maxi enduro sector. The tires are specially designed and reinforced to last a long time in difficult terrain.
Main characteristics:
- super-reinforced layers (heel and belt)
- puncture-resistant housing
- reinforced heel
- rim saver
- natural rubber-rich compound/blend (some models are 100% natural rubber, others with a synthetic component and some hybrids)
Each Tractionator is built for tough terrain such as desert, multi-day enduro events/tours or long adventure tours. In this series we find:
- Tractionator Adventure
-
- 25% on-road, 75% off-road
- 25% harder than the average adventure tire, created for demanding trails and riders and with a deeper tread than most competitors and designed to ‘self-protect’ from high mileage and asphalt resistance. Excellent for warm climates such as Australia, Western and Southern Europe, South America, Africa…
- present in TT (inner tube) and TL (without inner tube)
- Tractionator Rallz
-
- 20% on-road, 80% off-road
- the most aggressive model for adventure bikes with combined DNA between Adventure and Desert models. Excellent for conditions ranging from desert areas to coastal forests, trails and trials. Hybrid compound with silica for excellent grip in mud and snow.
- present in TT and TL
- Tractionator GPS
-
- 50% on-road, 50% off-road (depending on the mounting direction, the percentage of off-road increases)
- is the workhorse of Motoz for its possibilities and dynamism of use, being able to be mounted in one direction or another for more or less off-road performance. Excellent performance both in terrain and mileage for long trips.
- only in TL
- Tractionator Enduro S/T
-
- 10% on-road, 90% off-road
- designed to provide aggressive traction in soft terrain by combining the grip of an mx tire with a bead and casing that are more resistant to wear and punctures. It can be mounted in both directions depending on the characteristics of the terrain (dry, wet) or to increase performance when it starts to wear. DOT and ECERT75 homologation (FIM for some sizes)
- TT only (not recommended for motorcycles > 200kg+)
- Tractionator Enduro I/T
-
- 10% on-road, 90% off-road
- designed to perform better in mixed terrain in all conditions and for multi-day enduro/dual sport without having to change tires. It excels on steep climbs and tight single-lane curves. DOT and ECERT75 homologation (FIM for some sizes)
- TT only (not recommended for motorcycles > 200kg+)
Hybrid
Motoz invented the hybrid concept in 2013, for which it won many awards, including 2014’s“Most Innovative Product of the Year” at the American International Motorcycle Expo. The main feature is the design and traction typical of trial tires, also with enduro sizes.
Terrapactor
Specially designed and engineered for motocross use, they feature a super-lightweight carcass with alternating stiffness zones and flex zones in the heel and tread.
Euro Enduro 6
Anyway…
Now the only negative part: the availability in some countries. Unfortunately, there is not yet a sales network, for example in Italy…so the availability is limited(in case, contact me so I can help you to receive them at home!). In all this, a ray of light in anticipating that, although still in embryonic stage, in 2024 also Italy will see the massive presence of Motoz on the market!
After having illustrated the range of products MotozI’ll keep an eye on my instagram profile ( CLICK ) because in future articles I will talk specifically about each of the models I have used over the years, especially for the dual sport/adventure sector.
And for any information on the subject, please write me or leave a comment below!
Gaaaaas to life!
